I didn't get top notch grades in World History last year for nothing. It could possibly have been, the War of 1812 was a 'mega war'. Or maybe the Russo-Japanese War. Many small outbreaks during the 19th century was all possible, with conflicts between France and the US. France didn't get anything for helping the Americans in the War for Independence, so it's possibly there that France ( in the Kats universe) decided to try to clobber the United States, in a way. And maybe another country decided to help France, say Germany. And Britain comes to the aid of the US (War of 1812 ended with an agreement to help one another). And then Prussia helps Germany, Canada helps the US, put it in a nutshell and you have MWI. MWII comes along, a Serbian shoots Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, causing an equivalent to WWI. And ending with MWIII, being WWII equiv. Or, scratch the first idea out. Maybe the Korean War, or the Vietnam war turned into a MW. It could have happened. We don't know. So far, we can make assumptions. But, the way the timeline in SK (Ghost Pilot), Ann Gora says the Red Lynx's plane was in the harbor for over 50 years, turning the time to the 1940's. So maybe they weren't as advanced in the 40's as in the 10's. And then after the war, they had a technology spurt. In our universe, they has biplanes in WWII. The Allies had them. According to the show, they were not as technologically advanced then, 50 years ago, during MWII. That's another theory of mine.
