(main reference http://www.oit.itd.umich.edu/bio/Chordata/Mammalia/Carnivora/Hyaenidae.shtml which has a ton of very interesting info on a lot of creatures.) Hyenas are in their own family (Hyaenidae) and four species currently exist. Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena) Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) Brown Hyena (Parahyaena brunnea) Aardwolf (Proteles cristata) Phylogenetically, the Hyaenidae are most closely related to the Viverrids (civets, linsangs, genets, palm civets, toddy cats, binturong, fossas), Herpestids (mongooses, meerkats, suricats, fossas) and Felidae (cats). Their fossil record goes back to the Miocene. BTW: Hyenaboy -- nice webring for the Hyenas, and which bloodline are you from? ----------------- Rauhnee Ranshanka; Katmin: MegaKat City Nexus ListHood SWAT Kat, Greeter and Snippet Gatekat http://www.peak.org/~dragon/index.html ***************************************************************** "Hope has three daughters -- Anger, Courage and Panic.
